Communication with the media

The function of the Government Communication Office is to communicate and explain the decisions being prepared by the government. Government agencies consult those likely to be affected by proposed decisions when drafting development plans and legislation.

Press releases

A press release is one of the simplest and most traditional forms of media and partner communication, which makes it possible to share information in a timely and comprehensive manner and at low cost. When planning communication, it is important to understand that a press release is not a substitute for targeted information and partner relations.

The government portal allows partners to further define their interests and receive news in a specific format. For example, you can subscribe to receive notifications about government meeting agendas, decisions, press releases, etc.

The Government Communication Office sends out:

  • notices directly from government sessions;
  • annotated session agendas;
  • press conference transcripts;
  • news of the Prime Minister and the government;
  • advance information on the Prime Minister’s weekly schedule;
  • news of the Government Office;
  • notices of competitions for positions of senior public service managers;
  • Flag Day notices.

Press conference

A press conference gives the representatives of government agencies the opportunity to talk about their objectives, decisions and activities and to give guidance on how to behave, if necessary.

A government press conference is held in Stenbock House every Thursday after the government session. It is good practice for the Prime Minister and two or three other ministers to attend the press conference. The Prime Minister gives an overview of the most important decisions taken during the session, while other ministers talk about the most important issues in their areas.

The Government Communication Office broadcasts live from government press conferences, which can be followed on the government website. A recording of the press conference is also available on the website after the press conference.

Background briefing

Attending a background briefing allows reporters to increase their competence in certain areas and to be better informed about the government’s objectives and planned activities.

The Government Communication Office has organised background briefings ahead of the Prime Minister’s important visits abroad and the European Council and to clarify or elaborate on some key issues. These background briefings are generally informal and not subject to quotation, but the background material distributed to journalists at the briefing is made available to everyone on the government website.

The Government Communication Office has also organised informal meetings of the Prime Minister with the editors-in-chief of national and regional newspapers, editors-in-chief of electronic media outlets and representatives of Russian-language media and foreign media.
