Margus Sarapuu will take up his duties as the Director of Strategy of the Government Office in September.
Sarapuu was the Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice from 2007; prior to this, he served as the Judicial Deputy Secretary General from 2002 and earlier as the Director of the Supreme Court. He received a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Tartu and in comparative constitutional law from the Central European University.
He has provided advice to the government authorities of Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, and Georgia on issues such as impact assessment, governance, the fight against corruption, and judicial management and participated in international conferences with presentations.
While commenting on his future position, Margus Sarapuu said that the process of preparing strategies is not the only important aspect. “It is also vital to address the ability of public authorities to implement the strategies and achieve results,” Sarapuu said.
The Director of Strategy manages the work of the Strategy Office, is responsible for the preparation of action plans and the coordination of the implementation of the Government’s objectives and key activities, is engaged in the development of the competitiveness growth plans and the launch and management of specific supporting initiatives, directs the development of governance, and provides advice to the Government and the Prime Minister.
A total of six applications were submitted to the open application procedure, carried out by the Selection Panel of the Top Executives; two of the candidates reached the final round.
Margus Sarapuu starts his new job on 1 September. Former Director of Strategy Oliver Väärtnõu took up a position in the Management Board of Cybernetica AS in February.
