1.9.2. Development of a Mobility System for Remote Areas
Approximately 12.4% of Estonia’s population receives drinking water from private water supply systems, whose water quality is not directly monitored by the state.
A study commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment in 2019 found that the water in dug wells and drilled wells in sparsely populated areas met the applicable quality requirements in only 29% of the wells tested.
The situation is particularly concerning in areas where groundwater is unprotected or only weakly protected. These areas cover approximately 50% of Estonia’s territory, including Northern Estonia and the islands of Western Estonia. This poses a direct risk to the quality of drinking water in sparsely populated areas. Viimsi Rural Municipality has therefore been actively exploring ways to protect groundwater within the municipality and launched a project focused on developing and testing a water recycling system for remote areas.
Using Prangli Island as a pilot site, the project aims to develop and test a smart wastewater treatment and reuse system. In addition to treating wastewater, the system would return it to households for reuse, thereby reducing groundwater consumption.
